After a triumphant win for Best New Comedy at the 2014 Olivier Awards, Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense was a must-see for me, so when revived at the Duke of York’s Theatre with a new cast, attendance became compulsory. This third West End cast includes John Gordon Sinclair (notable for playing Gregory in Gregory’s Girl) as Jeeves, James Lance (known for a number of TV series) as Wooster and Perfect Nonsense co-writer Robert Goodale as Seppings.
The play was written by both David and Robert Goodale, who plays many of the characters and after premiering at the Richmond Theatre last October moved to its current location, the Duke of York’s Theatre.
The play is a kind of play-within-a-play, so to speak. It begins with Wooster speaking directly to the audience and announcing that both he and Jeeves will be taking part in their own play with the help of the butler, Seppings. Whilst Lance remains in character as Jeeves, the other two depict a number of other roles within their play. The result is a fun, manic and hilarious comedy farce that has them cross-dressing, revolving the stage with a bicycle, and travelling in a pretend car; all done with “special” sound effects.
For comedy fans, this is a definite must-see that would have anyone’s sides’ splitting.
