Whilst playing chess outdoors is a centuries-old tradition in places around the world, London has not had a dedicated chess club that plays regularly outdoors until now. Theatre Life is proud to announce the start of London’s first open-air chess club, FourCorner Chess Club, which meets in a public square in Clerkenwell called St. Johns Square.
Club founder and organiser, James Richards, has set up London’s first outdoor chess in St. John’s Square in Clerkenwell. It is a non-profit, community club set up to help people meet others over a shared interest in the game.
Four Corner already has a budding group of members who meet up every Saturday at 12 pm (until roughly 3 pm). There are also ad-hoc evening meetups under the lantern light on warmer evenings when weather permits.
The club is keen to adhere to social distancing rules and distancing between boards, masks and hand sanitisers are in use.
At the moment, the club does not require membership, as it’s still small, and members can turn up and play for free.
